Engaging Trauma & Justice Informed Approaches

Student Training

The purpose of the Alliance student training was to teach about trauma-informed approaches and practices based on empathy, while also understanding the criminal legal system and challenges experienced by justice-impacted individuals. Participants learned strategies and skills to best support justice-impacted individuals in their current role as a student and their future careers. The Alliance training aligned with BCC’s 2020-2025 strategic plan to prepare, inspire, and empower students.

 

Faculty & Staff Training

The purpose of the Alliance faculty and staff training was to teach about trauma-informed approaches and practices based on empathy, while also understanding the criminal legal system and challenges experienced by justice-impacted individuals. Participants learned strategies and skills to best support justice-impacted students and the larger BCC community. Faculty and staff engaged in discussions, had access to resources, and implemented into their areas of specialization. The Alliance training aligned with BCC’s 2020-2025 strategic plan to prepare, inspire, and empower, faculty, staff, and students.

Phase 2: Engaging Approaches (Summer 2024)

Part A: Trauma Informed Approaches (Why empathy is needed? History and evolution trauma informed principles; trauma terms & terminology; strength-based approach; Wellness; Motivational interviewing)

Part B: Introducing the criminal legal system; challenges and obstacles; laws and policies; asset-based approaches; appreciative advising; evidence for rehabilitation;

Phase 3: Implementation & Assessment (Fall 2024)
