Did you know?

Over 60% of entering students at Bronx Community College are first-generation college students.

Who is a First-Generation Student?

A first-generation college student is defined as someone whose parents or guardians did not attend college or graduate with a 4-year degree regardless of whether their siblings or other family members
graduated college.

Why is it important?

We celebrate first-gen students as trailblazers in their families and communities and recognize the unique challenges that face those who are first, so we created the first-gen hub to help you succeed at Bronx Community College! On this page you will find resources and helpful tips to enhance your successful completion of your academic pursuits at BCC.

Five Keys to Success for First-Gen Students at BCC:

1. Take Advantage of Academic Support Services

Proactively using the campus’s free academic resources can help bridge any knowledge gaps and build confidence.

Tutoring labs and writing centers: Don’t wait until you’re struggling. Use tutoring services early for help with essays, math, or other courses.

Go to office hours: Make it a priority to meet with your professors, especially early in the semester. Building these relationships will help you understand their expectations and make them more willing to help if you encounter challenges later.

Meet with your academic advisors: Meet regularly with an academic advisor to map out your courses and ensure you are on track to graduate or transfer efficiently.

Manage your time and crush procrastination:  By learning to plan, prioritize, and break down tasks, students can avoid falling behind, increase productivity, and better retain information, ultimately leading to greater success and a more manageable college experience.  Visit the Procrastination Station for helpful resources.

2. Prioritize your Mental Health and Wellbeing

Many first-generation students face unique academic, financial, and personal pressures. Seeking guidance from trained staff can help you manage these challenges.

Office of Personal Counseling (OPC): The OPC offers free, confidential, short-term counseling for any emotional or psychological concerns, big or small. They also provide referrals for off-campus resources when needed.

Access Resource Center (ARC): The ARC can connect you with vital government and community services, such as SNAP (Food Stamps), tax preparation, and financial and legal counseling.

Remember to prioritize your mental health and find your “why” to stay motivated throughout your academic journey.

3. Engage With College Success Programs

Bronx Community College offers specific programs to help first-generation students transition into college life smoothly.

First Year Program (FYP): Designed to help first-year students integrate into the college’s academic and social environment, the FYP promotes student empowerment, community-building, and academic skill development.

College Discovery (CD): This program provides academic and financial support to select students who can benefit from extra assistance. Services include college orientations, personalized counseling, tutoring, and additional financial aid. First-time freshmen in the CD program also have access to resources through a special handbook.

ASAP Program: The Bronx Community College ASAP program is a comprehensive support system designed to help students earn an associate degree within three years. It provides financial assistance, such as a tuition and fee gap scholarship, free MetroCards, and textbook assistance.

4. Build a Campus Community

A strong support network can combat feelings of isolation and improve your overall college experience.

Find other first-gen students: Look for campus clubs and programs specifically for first-generation students. Coming Soon. Surrounding yourself with peers who understand your journey can create a valuable support system.

Join a club or group: Get involved in student organizations that align with your interests. This is an excellent way to make friends, network, and take a break from academics.

5. Prioritize Your Financial Literacy

Managing finances can be a source of significant stress, so it is crucial to take control early.

Complete the FAFSA and search for scholarships: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the gateway to grants, work-study, and federal loans. Additionally, ask the financial aid office about scholarships specifically for first-generation students.

Learn to budget: Make a budget to manage your monthly costs and monitor your spending. Being financially savvy can reduce stress and allow you to focus on your studies.

If do not identify as first-gen  but you’re looking for a place to build community and support that will help you integrate into life here at BCC we are here for you as well. We are also here for you if you would like to be an ally for first gen students.
