Currently Matriculating Students: To attend CLIP, you must be referred by a professor or a counselor at your campus.

When you complete CLIP, you will automatically be readmitted to the CUNY college that accepted you.

Our Students

Our program is designed primarily for first-time freshmen with English language needs, who have not yet passed their CUNY writing basic skills tests.

We offer an option for ESL students who prefer a full-time immersion approach to their English language studies, which does not draw upon their financial aid allocation. You can also be referred to CLIP by college offices of admissions, freshman year programs, SEEK, and College Discovery. In addition, faculty in ESL and developmental skills departments refer students they believe will benefit from the CLIP instructional model. Students may also be referred if they have been academically dismissed from a four-year college having failed the same ESL course twice.

Instruction is offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. You will be placed according to an essay, a standardized, multiple-choice test and your CUNY reading and writing scores.

CLIP is a demanding program. It is suitable only for you if who can participate in a class that meets five hours per day, five days per week (during daytime or evening sessions). You must also devote time outside of class to reading and other homework assignments. To be successful, you will have to balance your work, family, and CLIP obligations.
