Run the Bronx Recap
Bronx Community College hosted a record-breaking 48th Annual Roscoe C. Brown Jr. Hall of Fame 10K and 5K Runs and 2-Mile Walk – known as “Run the Bronx”– on May 2, drawing more than 2,300 participants from across the Bronx, New York State, and beyond, and raising a record amount in support of student success. Funds raised will endow a scholarship in honor of Dr. Brown, supporting future generations of Bronx students and continuing his legacy of leadership and service.
Co-founded in 1978 by the late and distinguished BCC president and Tuskegee Airman Roscoe C. Brown Jr., Run the Bronx is the second oldest footrace in New York City. The event celebrates fitness and wellness in the borough while advancing efforts to improve health outcomes for Bronx residents.
Opening remarks were delivered by BCC President Dr. Larry Johnson, New York City Council Member Pierina Ana Sanchez, State Senator Robert Jackson, and a representative from the Governor’s Office, Mr. Fidel Malena, who read an official proclamation. Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson also participated in the closing awards ceremony.
The event takes on added significance as the Bronx ranks last among New York State counties for health outcomes. Residents face an estimated 85 percent higher risk of obesity than those in Manhattan, and the borough has a diabetes rate of approximately 10 percent.
Race routes began and ended on the BCC campus and extended through surrounding neighborhoods, including the iconic Grand Concourse. The 10K First Place finisher was Abelino Alatorre in the male category and Tiasha Roberts-Liverpool in the female category; 5K winners were Abdel Khalil, male, and Ari Gibbs, female.
We would like to give special thanks to our sponsors and volunteers:
Bronx Community College cannot host an event like Run the Bronx without the support from great sponsors and volunteers.
Over the years, we have had numerous organizations that have come back year after year to provide a team, take part in the Run Pavilion, and give health as well as financial assistance.
