Cellphones

The snatching of electronic devices on the streets, subways, buses, etc, is on the increase. Smart phone manufacturers are responding by making it easier to locate your phone/tablet in the event of loss or theft. New applications are great investigative tools for law enforcement that help them recover your smart device. In addition, you can wipe and lock it out at the same time. Some apps even enable your phone to snap a picture of the thief and send it to you via email. Here are some of the popular ones that have proved effective:

Find my iPhone

Let Find My iPhone save the day. Turn it on in your iCloud settings and if you misplace your iPhone, you'll see where you left it. You can also send a message to help retrieve it or remotely erase all its data.

Where's My Droid

To use this app, text your attention word to your lost device's number from another cellular phone. To make the device ring the default attention word is "wmd ring", and to get the location of the lost device the default word is "wmd gps".

Lookout

Lookout keeps your tablets and phones and everything on them safe and secure. It offers essential protection against all the bad stuff that can happen to your phone or tablet, like viruses, loss, and theft.

Plan B

Plan B is your last resort to find your missing phone. This is the first and only 'find my phone' app that you download AFTER you've already lost your phone. Having Lookout on your phone is the best way to protect your phone and find it fast, but use Plan B if you've already lost your phone and didn't have Lookout installed.

GotYa! Face trap!

GotYa! takes a silent snapshot through the front facing camera of the criminal who is attempting to use your device, whenever the screen lock is entered incorrectly. After taking the picture, it acquires the location of your device and forms a Google maps link, and then sends it with the time stamped picture to your email or Facebook!
Note: Always add a PASSWORD to your device to prevent unauthorized removal of APP.

Blackberry Protect

BlackBerry® Protect is a free application designed to keep your information secure if your BlackBerry® smartphone goes missing. If you're on an applicable consumer data plan (enterprise plans are not supported at this time), you can download BlackBerry Protect and then log into the website, where you can lock, locate or wipe your smartphone from wherever you are. You can also choose to have your crucial data backed up wirelessly and automatically, daily, weekly, or monthly.

(BlackBerry Protect version 1.1.1.76 is an update for BlackBerry 5, 6, and 7 devices. The correct version for your specific device will automatically be selected for you from App World when you click to download.)
